![]() TRiO: Introducing Holly Farrell, Jessie Montes, Greg Pelner OPENING RECEPTION: First Thursday April 6, 2006 - 6pm-8pm OPEN DAILY: Wednesday thru Saturday 11am-5pm CLOSING: Saturday May 13, 2006 WHERE: Garde Rail Gallery - 110 Third Avenue South - Tel.206.621.1055 With TRiO, we introduce 3 distinctly different self-taught artists. Toronto's Holly Farrell, Colorado's Jessie Montes, and California's Greg Pelner. We recently became exposed to Holly Farrell's hauntingly beautiful still-life portraits at an art fair in Atlanta, miles way from her Toronto home. Her moody, often melancholic depictions of everyday objects, like a pair of shoes, metal lawn chair, or china tea cup, have gained her a substantial following in and around Toronto. "When the objects started to take on a character of their own, I realized I was really painting portraits without any people in them." We are pleased to be able to present the extraordinarily intricate works of Jessie Montes, which truly need to be seen to be believed. Born in Mexico, raised in Kansas, and presently living in Colorado, Jessie Montes creates portraits and other subjects solely from corrugated cardboard. A retired custodial worker, he has been creating two and three-dimensional works of art from corrugated cardboard since 1990. His work is shown in galleries across the US and annually at the Outsider Art Fair in NYC. Greg Pelner is an autistic artist living in Los Angeles. His bold, distinct drawings of cats, angels and nudes are executed in sparse swathes of pastel on paper. Born in 1968, Greg showed an interest in art at age three. His parents had been told to remove him to a home, that they would never be able to raise him. Greg's work is in many important outsider art collections and has been the invitation piece for one of the American Visionary Art Museum's exhibits, "Wind in My Hair". His work has been shown annually at the Outsider Art Fair since the early 1990's. |
