![]() Tom D. + Melissa Duimstra: Grand Visions From Grand Rapids OPENING RECEPTION: First Thursday February 1, 2007 - 6pm-8pm OPEN DAILY: Wednesday thru Saturday 11am-5pm CLOSING: Saturday February 24, 2007 WHERE: Garde Rail Gallery - 110 Third Avenue South - Tel.206.621.1055 Folk art legend Tom D. returns to Garde Rail Gallery. Tom's first show was with Howard Finster in the early 1980's and his whimsical paintings on wood have been favorites of folk art collectors ever since. Over the last couple of years, Tom's wife Melissa Arpin Duimstra has begun to come into her own with her collage and stencil pieces. Tom and Melissa have also been collaborating, and this recent work has been very popular with collectors, new and old alike. "I've been drawing pictures or painting for as long as I can remember. I'm a self-taught painter and I usually quote the author Henry Miller to defend my lack of interest in an art degree; 'Education Stifles Creativity'. Or better yet my cousin Michael; 'You don't really want to be part of that Artsy-Fartsy stuff do ya?!?' Painting helps me deal with life. It gets me through the day." Tom D. (his surname is Duimstra) lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan and has the accent to prove it. Painting since the late 1970's, Tom's work depicts intriguing big-bossomed women, blues players, and animals, especially birds, in all sorts of situations and combinations. Working with acrylics, he applies his paint to found pieces of wood, and will often incorporate text, titles and anecdotes into his paintings and most recently, adding some collage to the mix. Tom's a seasoned veteran in the outsider art world, exhibiting with Howard Finster and collaborating with his wife, up and coming artist Melissa Duimstra. Tom has a celebrity cult following as well, which keeps him busy. "I can't say no, when people ask for my work", admits the artist. The prolific nature he exhibits is not a means to an end however; it's what makes him happy. Tom Duimstra has shown in galleries since the early 1980's and is currently shown in many regions of the U.S. His work has been seen in Raw Vision and Folk Art Finder magazines, and is exhibited annually at Folk Fest in Atlanta. |
