Southern Folk Art Unseen Sarah Jane Perkins (1916-2002) SHOW NOW OPEN >>> OPENING RECEPTION: First Thursday March 1, 2007 - 6pm-8pm OPEN DAILY: Wednesday thru Saturday 11am-5pm CLOSING: Saturday April 14, 2007 WHERE: Garde Rail Gallery - 110 Third Avenue South - Tel.206.621.1055 We recently came across a body of work that had never been shown or seen before. Sarah Jane Perkins, from Martinsville, VA, died in 2002 and left behind a precious body of work that just could have easily been discarded and thrown away. We are proud to present the majority of the estate. Sarah Jane Perkins' delicate drawings depict birds, flowers, and figures. Executed on paper with coloured pencil, the 8 x 11 pieces are a wonderful legacy left behind by a woman we know little about. The drawings themselves are thought to be 'sketches' for a quilt that Sarah Jane wanted to make, and looking at the pieces, you can easily conceive that many of the drawings could be made into quilt patterns. Sarah Jane lived a hard life, as many African Americans in the rural south did in the early part of the 20th century. Her story is one of hardship, hard work, and simple living, with a passion for drawing and working with her hands. The gallery feels very fortunate to have discovered Sarah Jane Perkins' work and is proud to be able to share and present the work that otherwise may have remained unseen.
