    BLAME CANADA FOR JENNIFER HARRISON

Garde Rail Gallery begins the New Year with work by Toronto self-taught artist Jennifer Harrison, featuring new work on canvas, and is the first in a three-part series titled "Blame Canada".

Toronto resident Jennifer Harrison paints images of houses and apartment buildings from places that one day she may like to visit. Evoking English or Irish seaside towns, Jennifer's Victorian row-houses fill up the canvas with just a strip of sky exposed above. Using generous amounts of oil, she spreads the paint liberally, utilizing a rich palette of greens, reds and browns. With its attainable sophistication, Jennifer's work has charmed its way in to our gallery.

    The "Blame Canada" Series
We're calling this series "Blame Canada" with tongue firmly in cheek. When these four Toronto-based artists burst onto the scene at Atlanta's Folk Fest in 1999, we were amazed and refreshed by their work, as were many of the dealers and collectors in attendance. In a matter of seconds, Jennifer Harrison, Casey McGlynn, Scott Griffin and brother Clint Griffin's very presence forced many to re-examine their definitions of self-taught art, and by the end what was considered a mediocre show for some, the Canadians had sold everything they had brought with them.

Being educated, young, white, and Canadian, the Toronto 4 defy the usual traits of many self-taught artists in the contemporary folk art world. Still, their work contains the immediacy, urgency, and quality that is attributed to contemporary folk art. In addition, their fearlessness in use of media and subject matter is helping to define the next generation of self-taught artists. Incorporating urban and pop iconography, as well as humor and personal history, Casey, Jennifer, Scott and Clint are at the forefront of an exciting new direction in self-taught art.
