More than a twenty-five years later, a new generation of artists are emerging, aware of both folk and contemporary and modern art, and influenced by both. These artists create with a no rules attitude that is the voice of a whole new generation. Staying in the narrative and pragmatic tradition of the Southern Folk artists that came before them, this group of young artists portray their individual experiences and varying perspectives in a unique new style. Although the styles all vary, we find them harmonious, and fitting quite well into a new sub genre we call Folk Pop. We are pleased to introduce three new Southern artists that are creating work that exemplifies the spirit and qualities of Folk Pop. Paul Cordes Wilm , from Birmingham, Alabama, paints on found materials. Paul's work is bold and colorful, Incorporating wit and irony to comment on the struggle of being green in a red state, as well as the differences in class and caste, and other emotionally charged commentary. Tim Hooper aka Mr. Hooper from Nashville, Tennessee, is heavily influenced by popular culture, television and comics in particular. In his meticulous and detailed paintings, he reveals the seedy side of Nashville and also explores his boyhood "toy" fixation. Lloyd Benjamin from Atlanta, Georgia, hopped trains for over a year and has finally settled into a stable life of creating art. His bright and bold work varies wildly, from his colorful past to present, bringing a sophisticated edge to the work. |
