Kevin Titzer: The Misplaced BeastJune 4 - 27, 2009OPENING FIRST THURSDAY: Thursday June 4, 2009 - 6pm-8pm OPEN DAILY: Wednesday thru Saturday 11am-5pm CLOSING: Saturday June 27, 2008 WHERE: Garde Rail Gallery - 110 Third Avenue South - Tel.206.621.1055 Kevin Titzer creates sculpture using wood, metal, and other debris found near his home by the Ohio River. A native of Evansville, Indiana, the 36 year old has been making art for most of his life. Kevin's subjects are playful, yet carry a darker edge and suggest that much more lies beneath the surface. This show will also feature collaborative work by fabric artist Marie Julie Villeneuve, from Quebec."My process is fairly simple. I start off with driftwood that I collect from the Ohio River. Mostly the wood I use is driftwood. After tumbling around in the water, the wood is usually nice and soft and easy to carve. Back at my studio I start to rough out the figure with hand tools. Typically the torso, legs, and base are all one piece of wood. The circumference of the base is the size of the log I started with. A head, arms, and hands are carved from smaller pieces of driftwood. At the end of the process, I often fashion props for my figures to suggest a narrative. I enjoy telling open-ended stories with my work." |
