Holly Farrell & Scott GriffinOctober 2 - November 29, 2008OPENING FIRST THURSDAY: Thursday October 2, 2008 - 6pm-8pm OPEN DAILY: Wednesday thru Saturday 11am-5pm CLOSING: Saturday November 29, 2008 WHERE: Garde Rail Gallery - 110 Third Avenue South - Tel.206.621.1055 Toronto artist Holly Farrell's moody, often melancholic depictions of everyday objects, like a pair of shoes, metal lawn chair, or china tea cup, have gained her a substantial following in Canada and the US. "When the objects started to take on a character of their own, I realized I was really painting portraits without any people in them." Fellow Toronto artist Scott Griffin creates dream-like scenes on scrap pieces of wood. Planes, people, trees and houses all seem to float over rugged pieces of industrial detritus. Characters and scenes feel familiar like recurring dreams, frozen in the sinewy medium, unable to escape. In his newest work, Scott applies encaustic to wood, to form shadowy shapes that dance and pose in familiar shimmery stances. |
