Vernacular Photography of Gregory BlackstockOPENING FIRST THURSDAY: Thursday June 5, 2008 - 6pm-8pm OPEN DAILY: Wednesday thru Saturday 11am-5pm CLOSING: Saturday August 2, 2008 WHERE: Garde Rail Gallery - 110 Third Avenue South - Tel.206.621.1055 Local artist Gregory Blackstock has taken the art world by storm since his first show of original drawings in 2003 and with the release of Blackstock's Collections he catapulted into the "world famous" category he'd always imagined. Greg's drawings are one of his many passions; others include world languages, music, travelling and photography. Gregory Blackstock has travelled independently for thirty one years. Gregory has vacationed extensively across 26 states, specifically targeting points of interest such as amusement theme parks, county and state fairs and boat races. Greg's social and developmental limitations due to his Autism haven't rendered him a homebody. Quite the opposite; he has sightseeing down to a science. Like his drawings, his trademark density is apparent in both his photography and in the albums in which they're stored. In a couple of the albums, picture postcards fill in so there are no empty slots. When I asked him about this, his reply was "gotta" fill it up!" One thing that strikes the viewer looking at Greg's holiday photos is the inclusion of strangers and passersby, the very thing that most people avoid when chronicling their memories and perspective of a vacation spot. Are the people incidentally captured on film sitting, walking, or standing on, or in front of the specific subject that Greg's after, or are they the subject? |
