Vinyl Stories:
Bill Miller

Washington, DC artist Bill Miller creates textured panaromas, interior scenes, and delicate portraits from reclaimed vintage linoleum and vinyl flooring. Creating an effect that lies somewhere between collage and stained glass, Bill's innovative use of the linoleum's pattern and color is his signature style.

Family members and familiar places become subjects depicted in rich patterns of linoleum, carefully placed, layered, then sealed on masonite and wood. Miller's work has been recognized for rendering narrative moods and a sense of common memory. His unexpected use of patterns taps into the medium's nostalgic familiarity striving to impart a sense of history and story within each piece.

Bill began working with reclaimed materials as a founding member of Pittsburgh's Industrial Arts Co-op, constructing large scale sculptures made of scrap materials in abandoned industrial sites.

Bill first sent us a few pieces at our Columbia City location in early spring - since then we've hardly been able to keep his work in the gallery. Bill has exhibited his work in New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Baltimore, Washington DC, Pittsburgh, Athens GA, Cleveland and Akron OH among others. This is Bill's first solo exhibition on the West Coast. Bill will fly out for the opening night reception.
