THE COMPELLING DRAWINGS OF GREGORY BLACKSTOCK: OUTSIDER ARTIST

We are pleased to debut the exhilarating work of Seattle artist Gregory Blackstock. Gregory is an autistic savant, and has overcome many of the limitations of autism, retiring in 2001 after "25 1/3" years of work at the Washington Athletic Club (WAC). Gregory exhibits many of the remarkable traits of the autistic savant; he speaks many languages, is an incredible mimic, and is able to recall events with uncanny precision.

Born in 1946, Gregory is also passionate about his music and drawing. He can be seen playing his accordion outside the Key Arena for Sonics and Thunderbirds games, and also outside the Opera House. Gregory has been drawing for most of his life (in 1966 the Seattle Times published one of Greg's drawings based on the TV series "Batman" of the 1960's) and, in 1986, Gregory began drawing for a column in the WAC monthly newsletter. His subjects range from state birds to state prisons, tools to WWII bombers, mackerel to Boeing jet liners.

These drawings are often large, on several sheets of paper pieced together by Greg with tape and glue. Using pencil, crayon, ink and marker, Gregory depicts insects and baskets with incredible precision, straight lines and text executed freehand, without the aid of a straight rule. The detail is fantastic, shading impeccable. Gregory's talent is astounding and, as we discovered one recent morning in his apartment, he is also highly prolific. His walls are covered by his art, letters from Gary Locke, Slate Gorton, Dustin Hoffman, and family photographs.

Gregory Blackstock is an incredibly talented and complex man. In writing this press release there is no way to convey this with any kind of clarity. Gregory will be in attendance opening night, with his accordion, and eager to share his drawings with the public for the first time. We encourage you to visit and meet a true outsider artist.
