Painting from the harsh streets of Overtown, Miami, Purvis Young is arguable one of America's greatest living self-taught artists. Self-taught and self-educated, he has been creating compelling works since the 1970's, when a mural a city block long captured the attention of dealers, collectors, and academics alike. Living in near poverty, Purvis has dedicated himself to studying art, his insatiable appetite for books and knowledge equalled only by his passion to create. Purvis is also a storyteller, and he uses the detritus of his surrounding community to tell the real-life stories and hard times of urban Miami. Purvis will fill a books pages with paintings, and create assemblages of wood and scrap to paint on. He is fearless in the medium that he uses, and fearless in telling the story the way it is. Purvis' work has been vigorously collected since the 1980's, and his work is in most major collections and book volumes. The large pieces we have on show are from the mid-late 1990's. |
