Sometimes the most significant ship developments lie in what is unseen: the underwater hull. The Bavarian was such a ship, known among ship designers for having what was called the “Belfast bottom.” The hull design allowed for a number of internal changes that allowed for greater operating range, an increase in cargo capacity, and better maneuverability in harbors.
