"From my Uncle Jeff, who served on the Smith: 'The name of the ship was the Alfred E.Smith (Gov. of New York and candidate for President). He lived at 25 Oliver St. in N.Y. and part of the sidewalk from there was imbedded into the deck of the wheelhouse and wherever they went in Europe, they sent a press release saying that the sidewalks of N. Y. were in town. One time, in La Harve, France, a priest came aboard because he was homesick and I took him up to the bridge to stand on the sidewalk...'"
