Bill Miller creates textured scenes and portraits from discarded vintage linoleum and vinyl flooring. Creating an effect that lies somewhere between collage and stained glass, Bill's innovative use of the linoleum's pattern and color is his signature style. Family members and familiar places become subjects depicted in rich patterns of linoleum, carefully placed, layered, then sealed on masonite. Bill began working with reclaimed materials as a founding member of Pittsburgh's Industrial Arts Co-op, constructing large scale sculptures made of scrap materials in abandoned industrial sites. Miller has exhibited his work in New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Baltimore, Washington DC, Pittsburgh, Athens GA, Cleveland and Akron OH among others. This is Bill's first showing in the Pacific Northwest and at Garde Rail Gallery. |
